So we've already had a thread about suggesting Underlords and themes, so I think we should have a suggestion thread to inspire James to write up some really cool Dark Gods for the WFTO universe.

Here's my proposed format:

Name: <name of the deity>
Theme: <theme of the deity>
Gender: <gender, if applicable>
Description: <brief description - appearance, ideals, etc.>
Favored Vein(s) of Evil: <what Vein(s) of Evil this deity would favor, if any>
Hell Name: <Dark Gods would probably run hells, so name it>
Hell Description: <A description of the hell the Dark God runs. Keep in mind that a Dark God probably would have favored servants that would get rewarded instead of tortured, as nobody would serve a Dark God if eternal torment was a guarantee>

Here's five suggestions I wrote up. I tried to make these gods Evil with a capital E, so some of their hells might give Dante's Inferno a run for it's money.

Name: Holocaust
Theme: Flames, Destruction
Gender: Unknown or None
Description: Holocaust is has and no defined form, appearing only as an ever changing flame in which tormented souls are trapped. When it speaks its voice is genderless and formed from the screams of countless burning souls. Its only goal is to see the world burn.
Favored Vein of Evil: Wrath
Hell Name: The Pyres of Woe
Hell Description: An wasteland filled eternally burning pyres, magma, ash, and smoke. In the center of Holocaust itself exists as the largest pyre of all. The souls of the damned burn and turn to ash that rains down upon the land. Eventually they reconstitute into their original bodies, but are then hunted down by hordes of fiery Ember Demons and other malevolent entities to be dragged into the pyres. These poor souls either give up and wait for doom to once again descend upon them, or they flee in vain as the smoke and ash fill their lungs and burn their eyes, inevitably leading to their collasping and being caught or stumbling blindly into one of the pyres they so desperately sought to avoid. Those souls that Holocaust favors are transformed into beings of fire themselves, so that they may forever enjoy hunting and burning the damned.

Name: The Golden Prince
Theme: Avarice
Gender: Male
Description: Appears as a handsome young man in his early teens with skin of gold and eyes of diamonds, wearing vestments made from threads of gold, silver, and platinum and other fine materials, with a crown and cloak encrusted in jewels of peerless beauty. He advocates attaining wealth and all that comes with it at the cost of all else.
Favored Vein of Evil: Greed
Hell Name: The Principality of Prosperity
Hell Description: The realm of the Golden Prince is constituted of grand palaces surrounded by ramshackle slums. The grandest palace of all belongs to The Golden Prince himself, but others are granted to his favored servants who become the Golden Lords. Within each palace are orchards whose trees bear fruit made of gold, silver, and gemstones, providing unending wealth . The slums outside of the palaces are filled with the souls of the damned who live in endless poverty. Though suffering starvation, disease, and all the other woes of the poor they will never die. To ease their pain many will seek to serve a Golden Lord, as those that do will receive at least something approaching decent food and shelter, but these positions are limited and rarely permanent. One of the Golden Lords' favorite amusements is to send their hirelings out as messengers to one another, as the impoverished souls eager for a good meal with savagely chase and beat any they suspect of being in the service of a Lord so that the message will not be delivered and the failed hireling will lose his or her position so that another will open up. Though theft is common and even encouraged, any even suspected of stealing from the nobility are stripped naked, have gold coins burned into their skin, and are then thrown into the hungry and savage slums so that the coins will be violently torn out.

Name: Black Death
Theme: Death and Undeath
Gender: None
Description: A god of death that hates the living and wishes to either kill them all or convert them into its beloved undead. It manifests as inky black energy that is ever drawn inward. When it chooses to speak any listener will hear only unintelligible whispers that are in some unknown language, but all who hear these whispers somehow know their meaning.
Favored Vein of Evil: None
Hell Name: The Great Necropolis
Hell Description: A vast graveyard filled with tombstones, crypts, bones, dead trees, and fountains of blood. All souls that come here become undead. The damned become base skeletons, zombies, and spirits, eternally trapping them in a body which not only deprives them of control but of all senses but sight and sound. This is not a blessing by any means, as the only sights are those of the horrible undead and most sounds the moans of their fellow damned and sermons from the favored about the glories of death. The favored are incarnated as higher undead such as vampires, and have free reign to control the vessels of the damned as they see fit.

Name: <can't think of one>
Theme: Lust and Pain
Gender: Female
Description: She appears to her viewer as a succubus with a form of ideal sexual beauty. She is the matron deity of succubi everywhere, and values enticing mortals through lust as well as inflicting and receiving pain. She is quite fond of fellow deviants and is constantly looking for new amusements.
Favored Vein(s) of Evil: Greed
Hell Name: The Garden of Anguish
Hell Description: A verdant garden filled with beautiful flowers and decorations. Of course, the flowers all have thorns and the decorations consist of various torture devices that the damned are strapped to. Succubi endlessly wonder the Garden, tasked with coming up with new and inventive ways to torture both the damned and eachother. Those who the goddess favors are given towers as to serve as their homes, from which they can gather succubi and slaves from the garden and endlessly wallow in whatever sensual and perverse pleasures they desire.

I warn you - this one is particularly vile. Don't read while eating.
Name: The Devourer
Theme: Gluttony, Poison
Gender: Male
Description: He appears as a large, disgusting blob of fat with countless long, multi-jointed arms. He does not appear to have eyese, and though it is uncertain whether or not he has any mouths anything his arms shove into his folds of fat never comes out again. His voice is described as being the most vile mixture of belching and farting. He lives only to eat and would devour the entire world give half a chance. He favors Chunders, and may have had a hand in their creation.
Favored Vein(s) of Evil: Sloth
Hell Name: The Eternal Banquet
Hell Description: At the center of everything in this realm is a grand banquet hall surrounded by farms, orchards, and grazing lands for livestock. Inside is a table which stretches for miles covered in every food imaginable. The Devourer and his favored feast endlessly on rich, succulent delicacies, increasing their girth to titanic proportions. The damned souls in this realm suffer two fates, for the Devourer wishes that they truly appreciate everything that goes into the preparation of his feast. The first is to serve the Devourer and his guests, working in ever aspect of the food preparation process. They toil in the fields, the slaughterhouses, and the kitchens, not allowed to have any food themselves. Eventually all come to serve in the banquet hall itself, which is filled with noxious fumes from the various bodily excretions of those at the table. If the servants are not cautious, they will be mistaken as being part of the meal themselves. They will be eaten and digested alive, feeling every pain and smelling every smell along the way. This is the first step into the second fate. After being digested, the one who ate them will excrete the damned soul as waste. The soul will continue to feel and smell everything in this state. The excrement is taken to the fields and grazing lands to serve as fertilizer. As the nutrients are absorbed by the plants, the soul becomes the plants. Plants harvested feel the sickle cut through them as if it were their own body being cut, and plants eaten by livestock feel and smell everything as they are chewed and digested. The latter also become the livestock just as they did when they became the plants, and feel everything as they are slaughtered. Whatever form of ingredient they take, they are taken to the kitches where they are cooked (a process where once again the souls experience everything) and are then served to the guests, where the cycle of digestion, excretion, fertilization, harvesting, and cooking repeats itself. The only hope these souls have of escaping this vile cycle is if a damned servant gets hungry enough to break the taboo on eating and gorges on the food meant to be served in the banquet hall - when this happens the standard process of painful digestion occurs, but rather than being absorbed into a new body the souls eaten by the hapless servant are anally rebirthed as servants again, a process which invariably kills the one who broke the taboo. Nothing is wasted in this realm, so the dead servant's corpse is taken to the kitches to be used as an ingredient and the servant's soul will experience the horrid cycle themselves.

as a german, i think the name of the first god is not selectable and unacceptable.

How about a god for every sin stated in the Bible?
  • 1 Lust
  • 2 Gluttony
  • 3 Greed
  • 4 Sloth
  • 5 Wrath
  • 6 Envy
  • 7 Pride
I like this idea.

How about a god for every sin stated in the Bible?
  • 1 Lust
  • 2 Gluttony
  • 3 Greed
  • 4 Sloth
  • 5 Wrath
  • 6 Envy
  • 7 Pride
A few reasons:

1. The actual list in the Bible is different:
  1. A proud look
  2. A lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood
  4. A heart that devises wicked plots
  5. Feet that are swift to run into mischief
  6. A deceitful witness that uttereth lies
  7. Him that soweth discord among brethren
The list you're referring to actually came in 590 AD written by Pope Gregory I and is a revised version of the eight evil thoughts written in the 4th Century by the monk Evagrius Ponticus - full info here.

2. Each of the Veins of Evil are already sins on that list, which disadvantages the gods who don't have a vein of their own in terms of WFTO lore. I think it's better to use the Veins as a basis and distill those into other concepts - for instance Greed encompasses both Avarice (greed for wealth) and Lust (greed for sensual pleasures) - and to come up with some additional concepts that encompass evils outside the Veins.

3. Some of the Seven Deadly Sins would be shared by all the Dark Gods. All of them would have Pride - after all, they are all egocentric megalomaniacs desiring worship, how could they not have pride? Envy as well - they all wish to take control of the world from all others. (Also, who would worship a god of envy when there are gods whose themes offer the means to take what you want?) This is even more true of the original list in the Bible - they're all proud, I'd bet almost all of them lie (and those who don't outright lie would still be deceitful with half-truths), they all devise wicket plots to some extent, they all want to shed the blood of the innocent, most of them would be well beyond mischievous and would want to sow discord as well.

I am using an older different meaning of the word in this case - specifically "Great destruction resulting in the extensive loss of life, especially by fire." You are right it could be controversial though, but unless it's illegal to use it (I know Germany has some laws regarding that) I personally don't mind controversy.

Nope only natzy symbols or anything to promote its fascist views
you could easily have the name without any german controversy :D
then again there may be some people who still a bit sensitive or the word Holocaust somaybe it would be wise to change it

if you did this holocaust dude then this game will be forbidden in germany im sure (if they see it) its not about the controversy but the function to be able project it as an ally to you / to work for him / to make a faith out of it
the german ERSB ---> FSK will say that this will bring the holocaust into a good light, from player perspective.

well this is just a name that can be changed to something else so i do not really worry about it now :p

Name: Arganon, the Tyrant
Theme: Uh..tyranny. Also, control fetishism
Gender: Male
Description: Arganon appears as a giant knight, clad in full set of rusty plate armor that creaks loudly as he moves. For Arganon, laws are not made to serve the people, but people are made to serve the law, and the law eventually serves him. That being said, Arganon cares little for material pleasures, but enjoys the full dominance and control over his subjects more than anything - as a result, those who cross him are punished by means that even Draco of Athens would have considered far to harsh.
Favored Vein(s) of Evil: Rage (Arganon has a hearty dislike for disorder), Sloth (Stasis is an ideal of Arganon)
Hell Name: The Grey Wastes
Hell Description: An endless plain covered in dust, rock, and ashes, the grey wastes contain myriads of quarries from which enslaved souls are forced to carve out slabs of massive granite. These slabs are then then hauled to the tower of obedience, the ever-growing central structure of the Grey Wastes. As the tower grows on and on, Arganon hopes that it will eventually become high enough to pierce the high Heavens; allowing him to throw his demonic hordes against the forces of the celestial heavens and to enslave even the gods themselves. Those who aid Arganon in this quest by fueling his ever-constant need for new slaves will be allowed to participate on the Siege against the Heavens and become a full-fledged god themselves Lord of Hell once Arganon has conquered them.

Name: Kravan the Forge Master.
Theme: Hard work, crafting.
Gender: Male.
Description: A large towering bald muscular man with fire in his eyes and in his breath. He holds a large hammer in one hand, and a whip in the other. He is clothed in dirty dark pants, menacing steel boots and steel bracers, and a dark dirty shirt.
Favored Vein(s) of Evil: None.
Hell Name: The Infernal Forge.
Hell Description: The infernal forge fuels the fires of the hells, those that have earned the favor of Kravan shovel the fuel of the forge into the fire, while those that displeased Khravan are the fuel and burn forever in the fire.

Kravan favors hard working minions and despises slackers. While the workshop, its crafts and its most dedicated workers are his favorites, he encourages hard work in the library, training room and everywhere and thinks creatures should be slapped to work harder, creatures should work themselves to death pretty much under his rule.
He only tolerates a minimum amount of rest, imagine the work hours under him being 20 hours a day with the other 4 hours being for sleeping and eating.

Arganon is a good suggestion. Though the thing about people becoming full-fledged gods themselves probably doesn't fit - what evil god is going to spawn competition? At best he'd probably make his favored into demons that get to act as overseers and tyrannize his slaves.

Given that Arganon would only rise his most powerful supporters to god-hood after he has managed to storm the High Heavens and enslave everyone up there, I think becoming a god is a rather meak outlook when compared to what Arganon himself would be. But you're right in so far as that his faithful would indeed become the overseers who, through his commands, are allowed to tyrannize the slaves (read: everyone else).

@Rhalius: Say, you don't happen to know some guy called Pyro, do you? ;)

Name: Zolkoth the Conniving
Theme: Plotting, Conspiracy and Betrayal (Paranoia)
Gender: Unknown
Description: Appears as a cloaked and hooded humanoid. The Gods appearance under his/her Godly cloak is unknown other than the burning red eyes the glow bright beneath the hood. Zolkoth pushes his/her worshippers to plot against those around them for their own benefit and protection, be the ally or foe. Prolonged worship of Zolkoth tends to result in paranoia, as worshippers start seeing counterplots and conspiracies that are not there and spiral downward into even more plotting and worship of Zolkoth.
Favored Vein(s) of Evil: None in particular.
Hell Name: The perpetual Rat-race
Hell Description: Zolkoth's Hell is a large/endless city where the souls reside. Zolkoth promisses that he or she who can become the uncontested king/queen of the city will be freed from the hell. Those favoured and those not are all cast into the city equally, but it are the favoured quickly climb and scheme themselves to positions of power, whereas those who displease Zolkoth end up serving the powerfull or rising to have everything taken away from them in catastrophic shattering failure. Though the nature of those favoured by Zolkoth tends to mean that noone rules the hellish city long or uncontested.
