[Shrine] A couple of basic shrine ideas

With the Shrine of Perception being revealed, I thought of several other RTS gameplay mechanics that could make it into the game. As none of these are particularly complicated, I won't open a new topic for every one of them and will instead gather them here.


Name: Portal Shrine
Function: Portal Shrines always come in pairs and allow your minions to instantly pass wide stretches of terrain. This makes them particularly useful on very large maps, where your minions would otherwise spend most of their time moving from point A to point B. On the other hand, they might also be used to create "Fortress Style" custom maps, where the players are divided by thick walls of impenetrable rock.
Options: Portal Shrines could be made unclaimable, allowing everyone passage through them rather than only those who have captured them.
Problems: Pathfinding could be a potential issue - on the one hand, few things are more frustrating than seeing your minions running against solid walls while a portal is nearby, yet on he other hand, fully automated pathfinding through portals would be complicated to code and might result in awkward situations where you actually want your minions to go the longer way for one reason or another.

Name: Slave Market/ Shrine of Midas
Function: The Slave Market allows you to sacrifice captured heroes/ enemy minions for a reasonable amount of gold, the size of which depends on the type and level of the creature in question. It thus serves as an alternative to turning captures troops into either Skeletons, Ghosts, or Vampires (in terms of DK I).
Options: Instead of Gold, sacrificing a minion here may give you a temporary boost of mana
Problems: The amount of Gold gained by each sacrifice would require a good deal of fine-tuning. Additionally, excessive sale of prisoners may seriously bring the income of players out of whack.

Name: Soul Shrine
Function: Whenever a player controlling a soul shrine kills an enemy minion, the soul of said minion will be sucked into the shrine and give the player a minor boost of mana, giving them a slight edge in battle.
Options: Instead of Mana, the player may be given Gold.
Problem: The amount of mana gained by each kill should remain very low; otherwise this shrine (or controlling multiple of these shrines) could allow players to go an magical killing sprees, throwing lightning spells left and right.

Name: Dominance Shrine
Function:When claimed, this shrine emanates an aura that doubles the time it takes for enemy minions to unclaim/claim tiles in the immediate area of the shrine, allowing the players to create positions that are easy to defend.
Options: -
Problem:Depending on where the shrine is positioned, this shrine may result in insurmountable deathtraps.

Name: Tarblood Shrine
Function: The minions of the player controlling the shrine will slowly recover hit points whenever they are outside of battle.
Options: Instead of passively recovering hitpoints, minions may recover a small amount of hitpoint whenever they kill an enemy.
Problem: Depending on the rate with which your minions recover hit points, this shrine could result in problematic Hit-and-Run strategies.


Name: Spellfire Shrine
Function: Players may sacrifice either one of their own units or a captured enemy unit at the spellfire shrine, which gill give their offensive magic abilities a considerable boost (i.e. lightning dealing 50% more damage).
Options: Instead of boosting availiable spells, the spellfire shrine could give the player exclusive one-time-use attack spells.
Problem: Again, fine-tuning is required or we may end up with "Fireball falls, everyone dies" scenarios.

I like the Portal Shrine idea, though I'd make a modification to it - rather than having them come in pairs, I would have them capable of being linked to all other friendly portal shrines on the map. This would be useful for larger maps where your creatures would take time getting around, and also allows for some interesting map design possibilities.

You should make the soul shrine a blood shrine. It would still function the same way but there wouldn't be any conflicting canon(necromancers need those souls to do there work) and it could be a subtle callback to the days when blood was the mana source.
